New Rockwall shopping center set to open in 2010

Developer Crestview Real Estate LLC said Thursday that it will open a new shopping center in Rockwall early next year.

The Shops at Stone Creek is under construction at State Highway 205 and FM 552.

The retail center will contain about 85,000 square feet in the first phase, including a new Tom Thumb supermarket.

Rockwall : 'To Christmas With Love' in Old Town

Christmas ornaments magically come to life in Bonney Miller's book, To Christmas With Love. The tale provided the inspiration for a lighted holiday drive in the Old Town neighborhood in Rockwall. Residents painted wooden figures representing the ornaments, ranging from a star to a donkey, for 11 yard displays that are accompanied by poetry from the book. The tour, which begins near State Highway 66 and Parks Avenue, covers about seven blocks, and some of the historic homes along the route are decked out with additional lights. The neighborhood usually hosts a holiday home tour, but residents opted for a light display this year instead.

Kermit the Frog once said, “It’s not easy being green,” but thanks to increasing steel prices, builders of a Rockwall medical building found being “green” wasn’t so hard.

“We were able to build a green building at almost no additional cost,” said Scott Asbury, of 3L Realty Group.

Across from Presbyterian Hospital Rockwall, three medical office buildings are being constructed. Of them, 3L’s 17,000-square-foot building, which in early October was framework, will be ready for tenants in six months or less.

3 Rockwall students named Natl. Merit Commended Students

Three Rockwall residents, all Richland Collegiate High School (RCHS) students, have been named Commended Students in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program.

RCHS Principal Kristyn Edney will present letters of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corp., which conducts the program, to Kyle J. Bruner, Nancy H. Tien and Chris Wiseman.

San Martiño Winery near Rockwall feeds all the senses

In Spain, they'd call this wine estate a bodega. Any resemblance to winemaker Emilio Ramos' ancestral village of San Martiño in Galicia, Spain, is intentional, right down to the grapevines lining the driveway and standing in ranks on the back acreage of San Martiño Winery & Vineyards outside Rockwall. The red tile roof has a Mediterranean flair, too.

There's something else very European about this place: At San Martiño, food is a full partner in the winery experience.

New Rockwall County Library is something community can be proud of

For library volunteer Suzanne Vancil, helping shelve 75,000 books before Monday's opening of the new Rockwall County Library has brought aches and pains.

"Ibuprofen has gotten me through stooping and bending for two weeks," she said.

Still, she said, it's a lot easier than working at the old library, where 50,000 books were jammed in and there was barely room to push a cart. The new 52-000-square-foot library on Yellow Jacket Lane is five times the size of that building.

As Fate's population grows, commercial tax base falls behind

After leading North Texas in population growth rate three years in a row, the Rockwall County town of Fate is feeling some serious growing pains.

Fate officials have compiled a list of capital projects considered essential in the next few years. Total price tag: at least $13 million – eight times the town's operating budget.
A less than 3-year-old sewage treatment plant shared with Royse City is running close to capacity and will soon need a multimillion-dollar expansion. Many older roads built to handle farm traffic are now torn up and too narrow. Deteriorating streets border well-manicured new subdivisions, creating sharp contrasts.

Homeowners in Rockwall are the first to get a new high-tech tool that promises to help keep their electric bills low, NBC 5 reported.

Oncor is installing 3 million smart meters throughout North Texas and beyond, beginning in Rockwall.

The new electric meters allow homeowners to track their power usage every 15 minutes.

Rockwall Man Tries To Build Nuclear Reactor In Home

The FBI said it does not plan to file criminal charges against a Rockwall man who tried to build a small version of a nuclear reactor in his house.

The man's experiment drew the attention of federal nuclear investigators. Federal investigators searched his home, but said there was no cause for concern.
